THUNDER BAY -- A 58-year-old man is dead after being struck by three vehicles on Fort William Road.

Thunder Bay Police confirmed the Monday evening incident, which happened on a section of the busy roadway between the Harbour Expressway and Central Avenue, was fatal.

Police said the man was lying down in the southbound lanes of the road north of Mooney Street just after 8 p.m. when a minivan first ran over the man. A pick-up truck was behind the minivan and also ran over the individual. A third vehicle, another minivan, also ran over the man and collided with the pickup truck.

All three vehicles attempted to take evasive action, police said in a Tuesday morning media release.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, adding there were no other serious physical injuries reported.

"It's early on in the investigation. The collision investigators were literally working on this throughout the night gathering a lot of roadway evidence," police traffic Sgt. Gordon Snyder said.

"They're still working on it. I suspect it will take them some time before they come to a complete conclusion as to the circumstances surrounding the collision. The investigation is ongoing."

Fort William Road had been closed between the Harbour Expressway and 11th Avenue for several hours on Monday evening as investigators gathered evidence. It has since been reopened to traffic.
