Firefighters and police rescued an individual from the Kaministiquia River on Thursday evening.

In a release, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said firefighters responded around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a call about an individual on the ice by the Kam River Park off of Simpson Street who might be in need of rescue.

Once on scene, fire officials said it was apparent the individual — who was inappropriately dressed for frigid conditions — was intent on avoiding responders.

The person proceeded to run towards Mission Island, passing underneath the Island Drive bridge and toward the expanse of Lake Superior.

A TBFR airboat was launched from Mission Island, with a Thunder Bay Police Service officer on board to assist.

Fire officials report the individual was safely boarded and returned to the launch site, where they were treated by paramedics for exposure.

A total of two fire trucks, two four-wheel drives, a command vehicle, and the airboat responded from TBFR. The department advises the public to stay off the ice.
