Pikangikum OPP make arrest in 2020 infant drowning death

A 25-year-old Pikangikum, Ont., resident has been criminally charged in connection to an August 2020 drowning incident where a two-year-old child died.

PIKANGIKUM FIRST NATION, ONT., — A 25-year-old Pikangikum resident has been criminally charged in connection to an August 2020 drowning death.

In a news release, Pikangikum Ontario Provincial Police announced the arrest of Helen Fiddler and charged her with causing death by criminal negligence, abandoning child and failing to provide the necessities of life to a child.

On Aug. 23, 2020, police responded to a possible drowning involving a two-year-old child. The victim was airlifted to Winnipeg Children’s Hospital for further medical attention but due to the serious injuries, the child passed away, police said.

OPP began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death along with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

Fiddler was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court next in Pikangikum on Feb. 24, 2021.
