SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON — Ontario Provincial Police arrested a Winnipeg woman on an airplane taxiway Sunday following a pursuit that ended with her vehicle crashing in a field at the Sioux Lookout Airport.
Police said her actions forced the pilot of an approaching aircraft to divert quickly.
Details of the incident were released Monday afternoon.
The 34-year-old woman faces multiple charges including causing an aircraft to deviate from its flight plan, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, failure to stop after a collision, theft of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and damaging or interfering with a navigation facility.
OPP said they initially received reports of someone driving erratically at high speed and throwing garbage out the window on Highway 642 about 10 kilometres east of Sioux Lookout.
Police made numerous attempts to stop the driver, but she continued at a high rate of speed through downtown Sioux Lookout.
At one point her vehicle nearly struck a police officer.
Eventually, she drove through an access gate at the airport and approached the tarmac just as an aircraft was preparing to land.
The fleeing motorist proceeded up a taxiway before exiting the vehicle while it was still moving, causing it to crash in an open field between the runway and the airport.
She was apprehended on the taxiway and taken into custody to await a bail hearing.
