THUNDER BAY - More than 20 children took to the ballpark Thursday, giving them a chance to take their minds off cancer and instead focus on baseball.
Camp Quality Northwestern Ontario participants met up with Border Cats team members at Port Arthur Stadium for a late morning game. It was clear to outfielder Jordan Serena that the game was a highlight of an exciting week for the kids.
“We don’t realize how much our time means to them, so anything we can do to put a smile on their face,” he said.
Camp Quality director Ashley Quarrell said inclusiveness is a priority for the camp members.
“We plan our activities so that all of our campers and all of their abilities can be participating in all that we’ve got planned,” she said.
“They all come from different backgrounds, but we all have one thing in common and that’s an experience with cancer, so they all get a chance to come here and have an escape from dealing with the challenges that come with that.”
The campers also get a chance to build relationships that often continue throughout the year.
This year’s Camp Quality ends on Saturday.
