THUNDER BAY – Police say an impaired driver helped bring about his own arrest when he fell asleep at the wheel and “used his truck’s horn as a pillow,” waking up nearby residents who alerted police.

Officers allegedly found a 37-year-old Thunder Bay man slumped over the steering wheel of a black pickup truck after responding to the incident in the 1200 block of Victoria Avenue East just after 4:45 a.m. on Friday.

Further investigation revealed the truck had been reported stolen, the Thunder Bay Police Service stated in a release.

Officers reported observing “several signs” of impairment while taking the man into custody.

He stands charged with impaired driving, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and possession of methamphetamine.

The suspect appeared in bail court on Friday and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.

The police service said it encourages residents to call 9-1-1 to report suspected incidents of impaired driving.
