Police arrest suspect after bear mace used during store robbery

Incident happened at Value Village on the evening of March 23 after a store employee tried to stop the suspect from stealing clothing

THUNDER BAY — A 29-year-old Thunder Bay woman faces charges after allegedly attacking a Value Village employee with bear mace last month.

In a Wednesday news release, the Thunder Bay Police Service officers said the suspect in the incident was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said officers were called to the Value Village store on Memorial Avenue on the evening of March 23 after receiving reports of a robbery involving bear spray. The female suspect is alleged to have attempted to steal clothing from the store, and when approached by staff to return the clothing, attacked one of the employees with bear spray and left the store with the clothing.

The police service's break and enter and robbery unit became involved in the investigation.

The investigation led to the suspect being identified, leading to the arrest.

The accused is charged with robbery with a weapon. She appeared in bail court on Wednesday and was released with conditions and a future court appearance date.
