Police arrest suspect allegedly connected to pair of robberies

City police have arrested a man they suspect is responsible for a pair of recent robberies. The first robbery took place just after 2 a.m. on Thursday, June 27 at the Mac’s convenience store on Oliver Road.

City police have arrested a man they suspect is responsible for a pair of recent robberies.

The first robbery took place just after 2 a.m. on Thursday, June 27 at the Mac’s convenience store on Oliver Road. The second reported robbery took place on the same date at 7:30 a.m. at an ATM near the Superior Credit Union on South Syndicate Avenue.

Patrol officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service spotted the 37-year-old suspect walking south on May Street at George Street Friday morning. The officers took the suspect into custody without incident.

Police say a search of the man led to the discovery of a concealed knife.

The man is also suspected of being involved in a theft at a Canadian Tire store on Wednesday, June 26.

Kevin Yates, 37, has been charged with:

  • Robbery with violence, two counts
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Theft under $5,000

He made a court appearance during the weekend and has been remanded to the district jail.
