The Thunder Bay Police Services Board added another civilian contract to its ranks.
The board passed the four-year contract during its regular scheduled meeting Tuesday. The salary for that contract was already put into this year’s operating budget.
Police Services Chair Joe Virdiramo said there’s never an issue attracting people to these kinds of positions.
Many of the civilian positions handle major operations such as taking 911 calls. He said it’s a good service with lots of room to grow.
“There’s tremendous opportunity to work here,” Virdiramo said. “(Civilians) do an excellent job. They are under the public pressure all the time and it’s a difficult job but it’s a job that rewarding. In these times I think it was a good thing that we got a four year agreement. You don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.”
The police service employs more than 90 people into civilian positions.
The next contracts that will be before the board will be for senior officers, he said.
The board also approved $500 to sponsor the 50th annual Spring Conference held in Ottawa in April.
The amount was taken from the board’s special account.
