Police cruiser involved in collision

Cruiser, SUV sustain heavy damage in afternoon crash.

THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay Police Service cruiser sustained heavy damage in north-side collision with an SUV on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Dawson Road and East Avenue. A witness said the officer had put his lights and sirens on and was proceeding to make a left turn off of East Avenue on a red light when he was hit by the SUV, which was driving westward and struck the police cruiser while traveling through a green light.

The cruiser sustained heavy damage to the driver's side front wheel well, while the SUV suffered considerable damage to its hood.

Police say there were no injuries and the crash remains under investigation.
