Thunder Bay Police are encouraging homeowners and businesses alike to register their private security cameras.

Police, in a release issued on Tuesday, said the images are useful to law enforcement when conducting investigations.

Police say they do not have live access to the cameras or the images, but knowing the cameras are in place, registration makes it easier for them to contact owners for possible review of footage should a crime be under investigation.

Registration, which can be done at www.crimereports.com, is free.

“This program is a great example of citizens leveraging technology to partner with police in solving crimes,” said police spokesman Chris Adams.
