Police investigate homicide near Armstrong

Whitesand First Nation man faces second degree murder charge after police respond to incident April 1.

ARMSTRONG, Ont. – Police have charged a Whitesand First Nation man with second degree murder in connection with an assault east of Armstrong, Ontario.

Officers with the OPP’s Armstrong detachment were called to an assault Thursday at a residence in the community of Mud River, located about 35 kilometres east of Armstrong, and accessible only by train or snow machine.

Police responded to the call along with paramedics with Superior North EMS. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Lance Wanakamik, also of Whitesand First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Stanford Kokokons, 50, was arrested at the scene and transported to the Armstrong OPP detachment.

He now stands charged with second degree murder, and has been remanded into custody.

The OPP’s North West Region Crime Unit continues to investigate the homicide, while the chief coroner’s office is also engaged.
