Police investigate sudden death of infant in Pikganikum First Nation

Ontario Provincial Police and Pikangikum Police Service are investigating the sudden death of a two-month old infant in Pikangikum First Nation.

PIKANGIKUM, Ont. - Ontario Provincial Police are assisting in an investigation into the sudden death of an infant in Pikangikum First Nation.

According to an OPP media release, officers with the Pikangikum Police Service were contacted on Jan. 31 about a two-month old infant male who was brought into the nursing station and was pronounced dead.

At the request of Pikangikum Police Service, the OPP Northwest Region Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Unit were called in to assist with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

A post-mortem examination on the infant was completed in Toronto on Feb. 2 by the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service.

Police are asking anyone with information that could relate to the investigation to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the Pikangikum Police Service at 807-773-5007.

Pikangikum First Nation is located approximately 230 kilometres north of Kenora.
