THUNDER BAY – Police are investigating a video circulating online that appears to show a youth being assaulted near Hammarskjold high school.

The attack is believed to have taken place on Thursday, and police were made aware of the incident Friday, the Thunder Bay Police Service said in a release.

A TBPS spokesperson said the service couldn't comment on whether a suspect had been identified, with the investigation in its early stages.

The video appears to show a female youth being assaulted on Clarkson Street, less than a block from Hammarskjold.

Another female youth appears to attack the victim from behind, with another youth at one point joining in the attack. The victim appears to walk away at the end of the video.

At least a dozen other people are shown nearby at the time of the attack. Some can be seen documenting the assault on their cell phones or heard shouting encouragement to the assailant, while others continued walking.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to call police at 684-1200 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or online at www.p3tips.com.

The Thunder Bay Police Service urged the public to consider not sharing the video since it “easily identifies a youth victim.”

“If charges are laid against a youth, it may also represent a Youth Criminal Justice Act violation,” the force said.
