THUNDER BAY – City police have confirmed they are investigating an incident of online bullying involving a local youngster.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials on Thursday offered up few details about the case, in which the victim allegedly complained to Instagram administrators about language being used on the social media platform and was subject to harassment and even threats against his life.

Police spokeswoman Julie Tilbury called it an active investigation, adding there’s not much she could say until it’s been concluded.

Tilbury said it’s a growing problem.

“Unfortunately inappropriate use of social media is an issue everywhere, with all age groups. Anonymity, fake accounts and the fact that the providers for these social media platforms are in the States make it difficult for co-operation to investigate,” Tilbury said via an email response.
