Police investigating pair of injuries, including one fatal, in Poplar Hill

Officer with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service were called to a scene where they found a male passed out on Smooth Rock Road in Poplar Hill First Nation around 10 p.m. Friday, July 22. Upon arrival, police learned that the man had suffered serious injuries.

He was transported to the community’s nursing station, and at about 10:30 p.m. Aaron Strang, 20, of Polar Hill was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Monday, July 25.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, July 23 police say a 21-year-old man from Poplar Hill drove himself to the Poplar Hill nursing station for medical treatment.

He was then flown to Winnipeg with what police describe as non-life threatening injuries.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, along with the OPP’s northwest crime unit and criminal investigation branch are now investigating the circumstances surrounding both of these injuries and whether they are linked.

Poplar Hill First Nation is located about 120 kilometres north of Red Lake.
