Police look to identify woman seen with missing person Kacey Yellowhead

There is growing concern for the welfare of Kacey Yellowhead, who was last seen in the Simpson Street and Northern Avenue area on Aug. 2 at approximately 7:20 p.m.

THUNDER BAY - Police continue to urge anyone with information that could help locate missing person Kacey Yellowhead to come forward, including helping to identity a woman who was seen interacting with him on the day he was last seen.

“At one point it appears he meets up with a woman,” said Det. Const. Jeff Saunders, missing person coordinator with the Thunder Bay Police Service. “They seem to have some sort of conversation. We are releasing a photo of that person as well as a potential witness of having seen Kacey.”

Yellowhead, 25, was last seen the evening of Aug. 2, 2022 at approximately 7:20 p.m. in the Simpson Street and Northern Avenue area. Originally from Eabametoong First Nation, Yellowhead has been living in the city of Thunder Bay for approximately one year.

According to Saunders, video surveillance footage in the area shows Yellowhead walking southbound on Fort William Road toward Northern Avenue and Simpson Street. It is there he meets the woman who is texting on her phone. The two then continue southbound over the Neebing River bridge down Simpson Street.

On Wednesday, the Thunder Bay Police Service Emergency Task Team conducted a grid search in the area, including an aerial search with a drone.

“This information that we got today basically set up this for us to start searching,” Saunders said referring to images of the woman seen with Yellowhead. “We didn’t really have an area to search. We don’t have anything further, so that is why our Emergency Task Team is out searching this area.”

Saunders is also urging anyone in the area, particularly south of Northern Avenue and east of Simpson Street, to check their property for any sign of Yellowhead and provide police with any video surveillance footage that could assist in the investigation.

“We know the day he was walking on Aug. 2 it started to rain heavily at about 7:28 p.m. So we are not sure if maybe he sought some sort of refuge in the area,” Saunders said. “We are pleading with the public to help us try to get him home. This is an unusual case. It’s not a typical missing person.”

There is growing concern for Yellowhead’s welfare, as he has not been in contact with family since Aug. 2 and there has been no online activity from him.

“This is very concerning for the family,” Saunders said. “It’s not like Kacey to go this long without some form of communication.”

Family and community members from Eabametoong First Nation and the city have been assisting in the search.

Yellowhead is described as an Indigenous male standing about 5’6” tall with a thin build. He has a medium complexion, shoulder-length brown hair, brown eyes and a red mark on his right cheek.

He was last seen wearing a black zip-up hoodie with white draw strings, charcoal grey shorts, and white socks with no footwear.

Anyone with information that could assist police in locating Yellowhead is urged to call the Thunder Bay Police Service at (807) 684-1200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 and online at www.p3tips.com.
