Police arrested two Toronto men believed to be bringing Oxycodone into the area from the Thunder Bay International Airport Monday.
Officials with the combined forces organized crime unit – which includes officers from a number of local, regional and provincial police organizations – say an investigation revealed that one of the men arrested had a large quantity of Oxycodone tablets.
Police say the suspect had concealed the tablets internally.
Police say they believe the tablets were destined for the Fort Hope and Martin Falls First Nations.
Officers seized about 440, 80 milligram Oxycodone tablets and $970,000 in Canadian cash.
Police estimate the street value of the drugs seized to be about $176,000. The street value of the pills in Thunder Bay would be closer to $44,000, but police say the pills sell for four or five times the typical amount in a remote First Nations community.
Both men face charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
