Police were called to investigate a crash involving a Thunder Bay Police Service cruiser and a sedan, which sent an infant to the hospital Tuesday.

Police say the crash took place at the intersection of Tupper and Peter Streets at around 11:30 p.m. A 38-year-old male Constable was responding to an emergency call when the cruiser collided with a car being driven by a 35-year-old woman.

The woman and her infant daughter were taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre as a precaution. They were released from the hospital a short time later.

The cruiser was allegedly travelling westbound on Tupper Street when it entered the intersection. That’s when the woman’s car came into collision with the side of the police car, police said.

The Thunder Bay Police Service’s traffic unit investigated the incident. The officer was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with driving the wrong way on a one way road.

The officer was not injured as a result of the crash.

Police say the officer was responding to an alleged break and enter in progress at the time of the crash.

In that incident, a patrol officer became involved in an altercation with a possible break-and-enter suspect in the 100 block of College Street. A 29-year-old man allegedly struck an officer as the officer was attempting to take him into custody.

The 29-year-old suspect was charged with assaulting a police officer and obstructing a police officer.

The officer received minor injuries as a result of the altercation.
