Officers with the Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP are preparing for what is traditionally a busy holiday weekend.
Sgt. Shelley Garr said officers will be checking highways, waterways and trails for seatbelt violations and impaired drivers.
She said cracking down on distracted driving is also being set at high priority.
“May 16 to May 22 we focused on distracted driving,” Sgt. Garr said. “It’s the first of four weeks in the next 12 months that we will be focusing on that specifically.
“Distracted driving is a major cause of injury and death on our highways and we are hoping to educate the public on that fact.”
Garr added that people opening cottages this long weekend should ensure they have working smoke alarms, clear all vents, and lock their doors.
