Police Service renews call for public assistance in Baby Doe cold case

The Thunder Bay Police Service is requesting public assistance as the investigation of the 1994 infant death case known as Baby Doe continues.

On April 18, 2019 Thunder Bay Police Service- Criminal Investigations Branch investigators sought the services of Parabon NanoLabs (Parabon), a DNA technology company in Virginia that specializes in DNA phenotyping: the process of predicting physical appearance and ancestry from unidentified DNA evidence.

On May 30 police released Snapshot-produced trait predictions in the form of a digital image of a person of interest – the mother of Baby Doe. A news conference was held at that time to reveal the image and urge possible witnesses to come forward.

Individual predictions were made for the subject’s ancestry, eye color, hair color, skin color, freckling, and face shape. By combining these attributes of appearance, a Snapshot composite was produced depicting what Baby Doe’s mother may have looked like at 25 years old and with an average body-mass index (BMI) of 22.

Investigators received numerous tips as a result of the May news conference, and hope this new call for assistance will help the investigation progress.
