THUNDER BAY -- Police are requesting the public avoid an area encompassing several blocks in Thunder Bay's south end, citing an ongoing investigation.

The situation presents a potential risk to public safety, said a Thunder Bay Police Service representative, adding the force has significant resources in the area.

Motorists and other members of the public were asked to avoid the area of Donald Street East, Syndicate Avenue South, Simpson Street/Arthur Street East, and May Street South, in a TBPS release issued around 4:20 p.m.

Multiple sources around the scene of a Brodie Street apartment confirmed gunfire had been heard coming from the building, and that one victim was believed to be deceased.

Cruisers and officers in tactical gear with weapons drawn were on scene, focusing on a multi-residential unit in what appeared to be a standoff situation. People passing by were warned by police that there may be a firearm involved.

An individual was seen walking towards officers with their hands up, though their involvement is unclear. Not long after, several other people exited the building and were taken into custody.
