Police respond to assault at district jail

City police were called to the Thunder Bay District Jail Wednesday to deal with an alleged assault on a prisoner there. The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m.

City police were called to the Thunder Bay District Jail Wednesday to deal with an alleged assault on a prisoner there.

The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Police spokesman Chris Adams says two inmates, aged 45 and 25, have been charged with assault.

The victim was a 58-year-old man, and it appears the injuries were minor as he was not sent to hospital.

Another inmate at the jail alerted TBT News about the incident, and says it sparked a code blue lockdown, which led to several other skirmishes in the prison cells.

A spokesperson at the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services could not comment on the alleged incidents.

He did confirm that an incident took place at the jail on Wednesday in which an inmate was injured.

But because the matter is under investigation by the Ministry and the police, he says it would be inappropriate to provide any further details.
