Police save woman in high-risk rescue operation

Police say woman was trying to seriously injure herself before being talked down by officers on scene.

Police were recently involved in a successful high-risk rescue of an individual in distress on the city’s south side. 

Members of the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Uniform Patrol Branch were dispatched to an area in the 100 block of South Syndicate Avenue just after 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 8 following reports of a woman involved in a mental-health crisis and possibly injured. 

Social workers were attempting to negotiate with her when police arrived on scene. 

During negotiations the woman began to seriously harm herself, at which point officers intervened in an effort to save her life. 

Paramedics with the Superior North EMS were brought to the scene to assess her physical injuries. She was later transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further assessment. 

Her injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
