THUNDER BAY - Police are asking for the public's help in locating a suspect wanted in connection to two arson investigations on the city’s north side.

According to a Thunder Bay Police Service media release, 19-year-old Steffin Sam Varghese of Bangalore, India is wanted for arson for his alleged role in a house fire on Queen Street and he is also a suspect in a house fire on Hartland Street.

The first fire took place on June 29 just before 6 a.m. Police, along with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, responded to reports of a structural fire on the 500 block of Hartland Street.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire, though a resident in the home was critically injured. Following an investigation by the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, it was determined the cause of the fire was the result of arson.

A second fire took place on Monday, July 8 on the 400 block of Queen Street, though police and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were not notified of this incident at the time.

Anyone with information that could assist in this investigation or locating Varghese is asked to contact police at 684-1200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tip.com.

Police also said there is misinformation circulating online about these incidents and are asking the public not to share information online that is not directly attributed to Thunder Bay Police Service, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, or the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall.

A Thunder Bay Police spokesperson said the sharing of misinformation can hinder an investigation.
