A police raid in Neebing has removed about $265,000 worth of marijuana from the streets of Northwestern Ontario and landed four people in court.

The OPP’s Organized Crime Enforcement bureau made the bust on Mannisto Road in Neebing on Tuesday afternoon, seizing 265 plants in outdoor field and a small amount of marijuana from a residence located on the property.

Det. Staff Sgt. Chris Lawrence wouldn’t reveal the exact nature of how they learned of the grow op, but he did say the plants were fairly easy to spot.

"They were growing out in a field and they were easy to spot. We took them and cut them down right away," Lawrence said, standing in front of a stack of plants laid out on a tarp at an undisclosed location at the OPP’s Arthur Street headquarters.

It’s the first major bust of the summer, but likely not the last, Lawrence said.

"I think we’re at the prime growing scene for marijuana. There’s probably a number of (grow-ops) in the area and we’re looking for the public’s assistance to help us find some more," Lawrence said.

"It’s probably an average to large-size grow for the area of Thunder Bay. The street value of the plants would be about $265,000.

Getting the plants off the streets puts a dent in the local drug trade, Lawrence went on to say.

"I think it’s significant … A good marijuana plant can yield several pounds of bud. If you added that up or times it by 265, and you’re taking it off the street, it`s good for the city and Northwestern Ontario."

Lawrence said the seized plants will be destroyed soon in a controlled burn.

Charged with production of marijuana are two Thunder Bay men, one 31-years-old the other 18-years-old and two youths, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

All four were released and will appear in court on Oct. 15.
