Police snag illegal smokes

(KENORA, ON) – On Friday April 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m, members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 17 in Forgie Township for a traffic violation.

When dealing with the two passengers of the vehicle, police determined they were transporting a quantity of unmarked cigarettes. A search of the vehicle revealed 7 cases of illegal cigarettes. The tobacco’s estimated street value is approximately $19,000.

As a result of the investigation, a 55-year-old man and a 48-year-old man, both of St. Catherine’s Ontario, are charged with Trafficking in Contraband Tobacco contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

They are to appear in Kenora Court on June 9, 2016 to answer to the charges.

(KENORA, ON) On Sunday April 24, 2016 at approximately 8:00 p.m, members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 17A, near Highway 596.

Police spoke to the male and female passengers and it was determined they were transporting a quantity of unmarked cigarettes. A search of the vehicle revealed 20 unmarked cases of illegal cigarettes. The estimated street value of the cigarettes is $60,000. Police also located a larger amount of American currency.

As a result of the investigation, a 62-year-old man from Shilo, Manitoba and a 42 –year-old man from Brandon Manitoba have been charged with Trafficking in Contraband Tobacco and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
