Police turn to public in violent sex assault investigation

Police need help from the public, and businesses with surveillance video, as the investigation into a violent weekend sex assault continues.

Investigators are asking the public to call in if they were in the area of north Cumberland area between 3 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. on the morning of the Oct. 23.

Investigators are seeking any details that may involve observing a lone female walking northbound between Cumberland at River Street and Cumberland near Egan.

Please call the front desk at 684 1200,The Criminal Investigations Branch will follow up with interviews if needed.

Any businesses or citizens with video surveillance in that area are also requested to call in , should the video have details that may assist the police.

In a news release issued Sunday afternoon, Thunder Bay Police Service officials said a female victim was walking in the 300 block of North Cumberland Street at River Street near Egan Street at about 4:40 a.m. when a man grabbed her, the attack lasting about a half an hour.

At this point the woman flagged down a passing motorist who called police.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and later released.

The suspect is described as having a fair complexion, a medium build and standing about 5-foot-8.
