THUNDER BAY -- In an effort to provide the public with an inside look, the Thunder Bay Police Service hosted its first tweet-along Friday night.

The city’s police were overwhelmed by the community’s response.

On Monday, social media co-ordinator Scott Paradis said he believes the venture was a success.

“I was pleasantly surprised at how many people were following along and engaging,” Paradis said.

“I think it gave them a better understanding about what was happening and it was great to have them virtually in the vehicle with us as we went from call to call.”

Between 9 p.m.and 2 a.m. police responded to a variety of calls, which provided the community with an inside look on what happens during a patrol. They included cases of an unwanted person, a downtown fight and an alcohol issue at a local residence.

Paradis said he also kept an eye on the Facebook and Instagram pages to see if people were commenting there.

“People just kind of peppered us with questions throughout the night,” Paradis said.

“We answered some if we had time and others we had to say: ‘sorry we won’t be able to get to all of them’ and people understood that.”

He believes the event was pretty successful as the tweet-along drew in more than 300 Twitter followers.

“From an anecdotal perspective just the sheer volume of people asking us questions, interacting with us and giving us a lot of praise leads me to believe that it was a success,” he said.

Paradis added they will look to offer more opportunities for the public to connect with local officers.
