There have already been more than 35 vehicle collisions in the city as of 3 p.m. Friday, the first day of winter driving this season.
“A lot of people try to blame the weather for the fact they get into a collision,” said traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter of the Thunder Bay Police Service.
“It may be a factor but it’s usually because they were either going too fast, didn’t allow enough space between their vehicle and the one they’re following or they weren’t paying attention to the ice conditions.”
Porter said Thunder Bay drivers often struggle on the first days of snow and cautioned drivers that regardless of the weather, they still have to stop when required.
“You have to drive carefully and you have to drive to the road conditions. Everyone just has to take a little more care,” he said. “You just have to take the time to stay safe.”
