KENORA, Ont. — Treaty Three Police have released details concerning their deployment of a conducted energy weapon at the hospital in Kenora.
The incident happened on Friday, Dec. 6.
According to the police service, officers apprehended a female under the authority of the Mental Health Acct and transported her to Lake of the Woods District Hospital for assessment.
At the hospital, the woman obtained a weapon and began to injure herself.
Officers attempted unsuccessfully to deescalate the situation, then deployed a CEW to prevent the woman from causing any further injury to herself or others.
A conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a Taser, uses electrical impulses that cause involuntary muscle contractions and the temporary immobilization of the subject.
The use of these devices is regulated in Ontario by the Ministry of the Solicitor General under the Police Services Act.
