The OPP are warning the public about a possible scam that is targeting people in this area.
Officials with the Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP say they received two separate reports of incidents that took place in the Nipigon and Thunder Bay area along Highway 11/17 Sunday.
Police say a woman flagged down a passing motorist in the Nipigon area. She told the driver that she ran out of gas and had jewellery she was willing to exchange for money.
A similar incident took place in the Thunder Bay area – a motorist was flagged down by a man who made a similar offer. The man suspected in this incident allegedly told the motorist that he had a ring that was worth $800, however, that ring was later discovered to be a fake.
Both male and female suspects claim to be Turkish, and were witnessed driving a dark coloured – possibly green – Audi.
Similar incidents have been reported to other OPP detachments in the Northwest.
Police are now advising the public to be cautious and wary when someone makes an offer that seems too good to be true.
