Port Arthur Curling Club closes season with Pride Spiel

Over 120 curlers took part in the event, with 12 of the 32 participating teams coming from outside Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY – The Port Arthur Curling club ended its season with the first of what is planned to become an annual bonspiel.

The First TBAY Pride Spiel is the first of its kind in Northwestern Ontario although many cities across North America do hold similar events.

Trevor Bonot, event chair, said that he has attended a few pride spiels in the past and that he was glad to be able to play a part in bringing it to Thunder Bay.

“I've been fortunate enough to travel around to play in a few events in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary. And they're so much fun and really, you know, just show the inclusivity in, the curling clubs,” he said.

Over 120 curlers took part in the event, with 12 of the 32 participating teams coming from outside Thunder Bay. Bonot said that it's an amazing sight to see, and emphasized the importance of having pride while playing sports.

“It's really nice to see people coming to travel here and, you know, to enjoy our city and to really just support everything in our community,” he said. “And, you know, I have some family came in and friends and from Minneapolis.”
