THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay Port Authority continues to see strong numbers for grain and other shipments on the local waterfront.
The numbers are in for the month of October and although they're slightly less than the boom year of 2014, they're still strong.
Just over 850,000 tonnes of cargo moved through the port, including 780,000 tons of grain. The total for the year thus far is 6.4 million tonnes, about 10 per cent lower than this point last year, which was the highest in 17 years.
Port Authority CEO Tim Heney said they're well above the five year average.
Heney says it's still too early to tell if this fall's warm weather will continue to work in their favour for the rest of the season.
The tentative date for the close of ocean shipping is Dec. 31 but the lakers may continue to move until Jan. 15.
