THUNDER BAY - The Port of Thunder Bay is projecting a strong end to the season.
The overall cargo loads increased during the month of July, compared to June.
The latest shipping stats show the port loaded nearly 850,000 tonnes of cargo last month.
The majority of that was grain, but there was also a big jump in coal shipment coming from Western Canada, and bound for steel plants along the Great Lakes.
The total cargo for the year-to-date is down about 14 per cent from the same time period last year.
Port Authority CEO Tim Heney points out that 2014 and 2015 were the two busiest years in the past two decades, and 2016 is not that far off.
Heney added that their big crane has been put to use more than ever.
It's been used for loading components for the new gold mine in Emo.
This week, it was used for a large shipment of advanced biomass pellets for the local power plant.
The pellets come from Norway in 1,000 pound bags, which are unloaded by the crane.
The bags are opened and the pellets are then put on trucks for hauling to the plant on Mission Island.
