Possible blue-green algae in Muriel Lake

Residents advised to avoid water in Kenora-area lake as Northwestern Health Unit awaits testing results.

The Northwestern Health Unit is warning residents of a possible blue-green algae bloom in Muriel Lake, near Kenora.

The bloom is being tested by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, the health unit said.

Until results are known, residents should treat the bloom as though it is blue-green algae, and avoid drinking, swimming, or bathing in water in the area, or using it for other household purposes.

Boiling water does not remove toxins from blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. Residential water treatment systems may not remove toxins and shouldn’t be relied on during a bloom, but municipally treated water can be used normally unless directed otherwise.

If contact with water does occur, wash with soap and water or rinse thoroughly with clean water, the health unit advised. It is recommended to wait at least two weeks after the bloom has disappeared before resuming normal use.

Residents can report suspected blue-green algae blooms by calling 1-866-663-8477.
