Thunder Bay Hydro customers could see a three per cent cut to their bill as early as May.

Officials with Thunder Bay Hydro Electricity Distribution Inc. made a rate application to the Ontario Energy Board. If that application is approved, customers of the utility could see their bills drop by about three per cent, which works out to be about two dollars less a month for the average consumer.

Tim Wilson, vice-president of customer service for Thunder Bay Hydro, said they expected the approval sometime in the spring. April appears to be the most likely month the utility will hear back from the Energy Board.

He added that when the company has a surplus in its regular collected funds, they rebate customers in order to clear out the balances.

“We typically put (the application) in late fall for our rate year, which is May 1 to April 30,” Wilson said.

“Right now the application sees a three per cent decrease for our residential customers on their bills and about a four per cent decrease for our small commercial customers. The three per cent is one of the largest I’ve seen since I’ve been here.”

People can view the complete application online at the Thunder Bay Hydro website.
