THUNDER BAY -- Synergy North reported power outages in three areas of Thunder Bay on a stormy Election Night, affecting a total of 3500 customers.
The publicly owned utility said up to 2500 customers were without power in the South Neebing area, including parts of Highway 61, the 20th Side Road and Loch Lomond Road.
However, a spokesperson for the returning office in Thunder Bay-Rainy River said emergency lighting was keeping the polling station in the South Neebing Community Centre open.
The spokesperson indicated there were no plans to keep the station open past 9:30 pm, the scheduled shutdown time for voting.
He said some voters used the lights on their cell phones as they cast their ballots.
Other outages were reported as well, including the Dawson Road/Paquette Road, and Goods Road/Woodcrest Road areas, affecting several hundred customers.
The Alice Avenue/Melbourne Road areas were hit with an outage later in the evening.
Up to 100 more customers were without power in the Redwood Avenue and Pineview Bay area of Northwood.
Synergy North said the outages were all weather-related.
The utility's website did not provide an estimated time for restoration of power.
