THUNDER BAY - A preliminary hearing has begun this week for a man charged with killing a 58-year-old man and seriously injuring another in 2019.

Nathaniel Austin Wesley, 22, is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault in connection to a March 20, 2019 incident that left one person dead and another injured on the city’s north side.

Thunder Bay police responded to a Cumberland Street address following reports of a male on the ground. According to police, the person who called 911 believed at the time a baseball bat may have been used during the assault.

Police located two male victims. One victim, Claude Justin Kishiqueb, became unresponsive and was pronounced dead.

The second victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The preliminary hearing is expected to last all week with crown lawyers anticipating to call 20 witnesses to testify.

A court order prohibits the publication of evidence or submissions made at the pre-trial.
