Preliminary hearing for suspect in dangerous driving causing death case begins

The preliminary hearing began Monday for an Aroland First Nation man charged in a fatal hit-and-run.

Ashley Rheal Shabogomik was arrested in November 2012 for criminal negligence and dangerous driving causing death in the October 2011 death of Joyce Ryan.

Shabogomik is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and possession of stolen property.

It is alleged Shabogomik was behind the wheel of a stolen truck that collided with another vehicle at the corner of Leland Street and Victoria Avenue.

Ryan died as a result of the crash and her husband Phil Ryan was seriously injured in the incident.

The preliminary hearing is expected to last three days.

None of the accusations against the defendant have been proven in court.
