There could be a hefty price to pay for those found responsible for a major gas leak earlier this year in Thunder Bay.
The natural gas leak on Red River Road in June led to the evacuation of hundreds of people in the area and shut down 10 city blocks.
The line was clipped by City of Thunder Bay staff who were working in the area. But senior city staff allege the locator lines on the ground were not marked out correctly by Union Gas.
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority and the Ministry of Labour continue to investigate the incident.
A spokesperson says the focus of the investigation is to determine why the pipeline strike occurred and whether the excavator had proper locator lines for underground utilities.
Potential prosecution includes fines totalling $50,000 for an individual and imprisonment of up to one year, or $1 million for a corporation, per charge.
