Prison capacity issues across province not impacting Thunder Bay

An apparent overcrowding problem in Ontario's jails and correctional centres is not being seen here in Thunder Bay.

An apparent overcrowding problem in Ontario's jails and correctional centres is not being seen here in Thunder Bay.

Statistics released by the Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections show that last year, nearly half of the province's 29 jails held more prisoners than they were designed for.

The numbers show the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre on Highway 61 had 117 inmates on an average day last year, but it has a capacity for 164.

That works out to about 71 per cent capacity,  a figure that has remained fairly consistent over the past five years.

Over at the District Jail, the capacity is 130, and the average number of inmates last year was 127.

The jail was slightly over capacity in 2010 and 2011.

Across Ontario, there was an average of 8,800 people behind bars last year. Provincial jails were at 96 per cent capacity.
