Police officers assigned to work at the provincial courthouse on Arthur Street got a little more than they bargained for Thursday afternoon.

Just after 3:30 p.m., a handcuffed male prisoner escaped custody when he bolted from the prisoner van outside the courthouse.

His freedom was short-lived.

He was apprehended by officers from the Thunder Bay Police Service about 10 minutes later on nearby Selkirk Avenue.

The man now faces a charge of escape from lawful custody and will appear in bail court Friday morning.
