THUNDER BAY -- The people involved in the operation of Thunder Bay's PRO Kids program say that, after running for 20 years, the charity has shown that it provides exactly what its name stands for: Positive Recreation Opportunities for Kids.

The program was implemented by the city in 1998 to make recreational activities more accessible for children and youth who would otherwise be unable to participate due to lack of funds.

At a news conference Tuesday, representatives said that over its two decades of existence, PRO Kids has placed nearly 23,000 children in activities which help to develop leadership and teamwork skills, enhance self-esteem, and foster social and relationship skills that are transferable to daily life.

PRO Kids was developed by the city's Recreation and Culture Division with the help of social service agencies, recreation activity providers, youth and other stakeholders.

Laura Daniele, who has coordinated the program since its inception, said that in addition to the benefits to the participants, "it gives parents a sense of hope and empowerment, knowing that their children can fit in like other kids and do something they enjoy in the community."

PRO Kids is supported by over 200 community partners who donate free or discounted spaces in their programs. Last year alone, 1,444 children were given access to sports, arts and cultural activities.

The 20th-anniversary celebration comes with the launch of a new visual identity and logo for the program.

According to a news release, "the new look includes a modernized version of the logo that exudes confidence, fun, growth and pride,"

PRO Kids is expanding its outreach by bringing its application process online with the aim of making the program more accessible.
