Prorogue motion passes

A local MP said he’s pleased to see unity among opposition parties in passing a motion on Parliament Hill Wednesday.

A local MP said he’s pleased to see unity among opposition parties in passing a motion on Parliament Hill Wednesday.

NDP MP Bruce Hyer, Thunder Bay-Superior North, said the NDP motion, which passed 139 to 135, suggesting a Prime Minister can’t prorogue parliament for more than seven days without a House of Commons resolution will put "tremendous pressure" on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and future leaders. While not as legally forceful as a bill, Hyer said the motion sends a strong message.

"When I’ve been speaking to my constituents in the riding they’ve been overwhelmingly opposed to this Prime Minister’s abuse of prorogation," Hyer said. "We have a Prime Minister who’s had his wings clipped today and he’s been reminded that he’s a Prime Minister…not a president or a king."

Hyer, the first MP to speak out against the Conservative government’s decision to suspend Parliament last December, said the NDP wanted to send a message to the Conservative government quickly with a motion rather than a "long and drawn out" private member’s bill.
