THUNDER BAY—City and area residents will get a chance this week to learn more about plans for a new jail in Thunder Bay.

A public information session is scheduled for late Friday at the Victoria Inn on Arthur Street.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services says the meeting will give the community an opportunity to discuss the project.

Andrew Morrison told Tbnewswatch the ministry intends to use the feedback "in considering the final design" of the facility.

The 325-bed multi-purpose correctional centre will replace the existing Thunder Bay Jail on McDougall Street and the existing Thunder Bay Correctional Centre on Highway 61.

The provincial government has said the new jail and another one planned for Ottawa will serve as models for innovation and renewal.

"This new approach will drive reform by taking a holistic view of a correctional facility, going beyond bricks and mortar and engaging staff, justice and community partners in creating a venue for rehabilitation that supports better outcomes for those in our custody and care," a ministry statement said.

In late March, the government issued a formal Request for Qualifications from contractors interested in designing, building, financing and maintaining the new Thunder Bay facility.

Although there has been no confirmation yet that it will be built on the existing Correctional Centre site, archeological surveying and environmental assessment is taking place on that property.

A spokesperson for OPSEU—the union that represents jail guards—has speculated the project won't be finished until 2024.

The public meeting will take place Friday, May 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
