THUNDER BAY – The Atlantic Avenue Water Pollution Control Plant and Bare Point Water Treatment Plant have both received upgrades as a result of provincial dollars.

The city received $650,000 from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change through their showcasing water innovation grant.

The grants allowed for the installation of energy efficient turbo blowers at the Atlantic Avenue facility which have reduced energy consumption for the aeration process by 25 per cent.

At Bare Point, the funding started a pilot project to implement an innovative water treatment plant in collaboration with Lakehead University to use a bifunctional electrode to remove contaminants from the water.

Study results found that process reduced wastewater generated by 33 per cent and reduced chemicals used during the treat process by 50 per cent.
