THUNDER BAY – A work-to-rule mandate put in place by custodians, maintenance and cafeteria staff has forced Lakehead Public Schools to cancel all community-use permits for at least a week.

The order goes into effect on Monday and lasts through Oct. 6.

The work-to-rule campaign put in place by members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees is also scheduled to begin on Monday, if last-minute bargaining sessions over the weekend do not produce a contract agreement.

The campaign would include anticipated job actions such as not setting up or taking down chairs or tables for events, either school-based or community use.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and will review community use permits for the week of Monday, Oct. 7,” the board said in a notice posted to its website.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

The board provides access for not-for-profit groups for use of both indoor and outdoor spaces free of charge during non-school hours.
