THUNDER BAY -- People worried about paying overdue library books can pay those fines by cleaning out their cupboards this winter.

The Thunder Bay Public Library is bringing back Food for Fines this year, an initiative that lets library users reduce their overdue fines with non-perishable food items.

One food item means $1 less on your tab.

“We really wanted to engage more with the community and help out. This is a great way for people from the community to help their fellow members of the community,” said Barbara Philp, head of adult services at the Waverly branch of the Thunder Bay Public Library.

For the month of November, all donations will go to the Christmas Cheer fund. In December, the donated food will be given to Shelter House.

And this year, the library has decided to expand the program into January and February.

“The feedback we got was after Christmas it’s kind of a slow time and the shelters and the food banks do need additional support,” said Philp.

Last year Food for Fines brought in 2,000 food items. With the campaign’s extension this year, the library hopes to double that amount.

Donations can be made at any branch during regular library hours.
