UPDATE: Police lobby reopened to public after grenade brought to station

According to police a member of the public brought a vintage grenade into the station believing they were safely handing it over to police

THUNDER BAY -- The lobby at the Thunder Bay Police Service Balmoral Street headquarters has been reopened after a member of the public brought a grenade into the station.

The lobby was closed to the public Thursday just before noon because of what Police were calling a public safety concern. The lobby was evacuated due to a potential explosive device.

Police issued a media release just after 1:30 p.m. stating a member of the public brought in a vintage grenade believing they were safely handing it over to police.

The device was contained by the Ontario Provincial Police Explosive's Disposal Unit and the headquarters returned to normal operation by 1:15 p.m. Police were still able to respond to emergency calls during the closure.

Police are reminding the public that if you are in possession of dangerous materials to contact them at 684-1200 and to not transport them.
